King Sunny Ade: A mix of African tradition with modern pop
Barre Montpelier Times Argus
Ade leads a very cohesive group whose intricate rhythmic patterns perfectly meld with the sweet notes emanating from the guitars. There were some surprising guitar passages with slide guitar and blues inflections that I had not heard before in the “Afro-pop” genre. But in general if you are familiar with Afro-pop you have a good idea of how this music will sound. I am not sure where Nigerian guitar music originated but hearing it one is reminded of reggae and the 1960s-’70s studio musicians of the Muscle Shoals rhythm section led by Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn. The notes seem to bounce off Ade’s guitar like soap bubbles floating in air. The music is delivered in staccato passages rather than long languid sustain in the style of Carlos Santana. Not only is King Sunny Ade a world-touring musician with an international reputation he is also a powerful economic force in Nigeria.

bsessed with music as a teenager Bibb would often feign illness to stay home from school so he could listen to records by folk greats like the New Lost City Ramblers Josh White and Joan Baez. By 16 he was playing guitar in the house band for his father’s popular TV talent show “Someone New. In the early 1970s Bibb lit out for Paris where he woodshedded to develop his blues chops. Later he moved to Sweden becoming a key participant in Stockholm’s vibrant music scene while continuing his ardent study of Delta blues and other prewar styles. His own experience in the 1960s folk revival gave him a taste of music’s free- flowing currents. “I saw Sun House live at Newport when I was 14 and it imprinted really deep” Bibb said.

“It’s worth a little bit more than what you would pay if you just went in the store and bought one like it” he said. Beam’s bandmates are disappointed but unfortunately not too surprised. “We’ve been playing music for a long time and so it’s not the first instrument that’s been stolen” Beam said. “It’s always a drag. “You’d like to think that your town or your neighborhood wasn’t like that. ”But he’s got a lot of eyes looking for him including most of the area music store owners. “If something turns up from it” he said “I’ll be happy and it’ll be out there on the street again making music.
