Essentials: This weekend’s live music picks
San Francisco Chronicle
tmpl –> Grupo FantasmaThursday and Friday @ Yoshi’s San Francisco: Rather than laying down an old-school salsa sound Grupo Fantasma is honing a decidedly 21st century version of Latin groove. The 11-piece Austin combo laces clave the fundamental pulse of Afro-Cuban music with cumbia reggae Afrobeat and psychedelic rock. The stripped-down horn arrangements leave plenty of space for the nimble guitar tandem of Beto Martinez and Adrian Quesada. Prince seems to approve; he invited the band to perform with him in London after a two-month run at his Vegas club.

As a result her songs are complex with many complicated arrangements. Lyrically her most recent material is both cheery-eyed and hopeful but she is currently working on new songs that have a more somber tone. For inspiration Stern looks to the past to bands like ACDC The Who and Dire Straights which is clearly reflected in her guitar-heavy music. As for today’s music well she’s not all that impressed. “It’s a fucking problem. There has been nothing for years that I have listened to” she said. “I still like the bands I was listening to when I was writing my first record.

The band as a whole often hits its stride when both both Hall and Daniels are playing bass at the same time. "Initially I was like who to call to be in this band Tony or Nick? They’re both close friends of mine and have been for years” Ivan said. "So I thought well Tony also plays the guitar and we had them both in and it just worked. They both play different and off of each other and what they do together is some kind of sick beast. Raymond and Ian too – Raymond is a monster drummer and Ian? (Expletive) Ian was playing with the Meters when he was 16 you know? He’s one of the funkiest rhythm guitarists I know. ” The band has one EP thus far "Listen Hear” (2007) and is working on a full-length album Neville said. But he admits that Dumpstaphunk is still in its infancy as a national band.
