“Benjamin Verdery is considered a classical guitarist of the first caliber. His 2006 release “Branches” has him performing the works of Bach Mozart Strauss and even the classic “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix. Guitar Review magazine called him “an American original an American master. “He is chair of the guitar department at the Yale University School of Music. Buenos Aires guitarist Cecilia Zabala combines the traditions of Argentinean folklore with the modern rhythms of jazz tango and Brazilian music. A YouTube recording of her song “Maravilla” demonstrates Zabala’s combination of modern and cultural influences as a composer arranger vocalist and player. She tours as a solo act and with ensembles including Cuatro en Punto and the tango group Mala Junta.

And though the drums aren’t exactly like playing real drums he’s “continually seeing people migrate from ‘Rock Band’ onto real drums naturally. ”As for the guitar he admits it’s “a far more abstracted version of the real thing” but players will still learn basic music skills such as a sense of rhythm. He told The Times:“We don’t see ‘Rock Band’ as an educational tool for guitar so much as an inspirational tool. Most people who try to learn guitar quit soon after because their initial experience is just frustratingly difficult. By giving people a taste of what lies on the other side we’re inspiring them to invest themselves in learning the instrument for real. The game isn’t a substitute it’s a stimulus.

Fans and musicians around the world couldn’t say enough about the dirty and droning — and often hypnotic — sounds he unleashed from his guitar which helped sculpt Stooges classics like “I Wanna Be Your Dog. ” But the loss was felt especially hard closer to home. “It was insane the first few days. I didn’t talk to anyone” says artist Niagara Asheton’s friend and former band mate. Niagara and Garry (Colonel Galaxy) Henderson have assembled Saturday’s tribute.
