It is believed to have been the 1830s and the workers were cowboys brought to the Waimea area of Hawaii’s big island. “They were Spanish and Mexican cowboys and they taught the Hawaiians the art of ranching as well as guitar playing” said guitarist Jeff Peterson in a phone interview from his car while driving to a gig in Hawaii. The Hawaiians set about learning to play the unfamiliar instrument and ended up developing a Hawaiian guitar style that mixed elements of the Mexican music with traditional Hawaiian rhythms chants and phrasing plus music of the early Portuguese settlers and even church music. Maybe it was because there were no music schools at first to teach the new guitarists the right way to tune their instruments but the Hawaiians began to experiment with unusual tunings especially open tunings to a chord so that the chord could be played with no fingers on the neck. In Hawaiian this kind of playing which called for the guitarist to turn the keys at the end of the guitar strings to a different tuning was called ki ho’alu “which means to loosen the keys” said Peterson. This became slack key guitar in English. Today Peterson and other masters of the style tour around the world to play before a growing number of slack key guitar aficionados and Hawaiian expatriates.
