Learn one string at a time before moving on. Your overall concerns should be on playing with even volume and even timing. Exercise 2: Crossing strings with downstrokesf course there isn’t much guitar music made up of picking a single string so this next exercise prepares you for crossing strings (going from one string to another) using downstrokes. As with exercise 1 learn each short phrase (ie two-bar sections ended with double bar lines) slowly and carefully before increasing your speed or tackling the next exercise. As string crosses are more demanding you will find your picking hand moving up and down a little more – have this movement largely generated from the wrist. Exercise 3: Crossing strings with down- and upstrokesThis is similar to exercise 2 except the picking hand will need to perform both down- and upstrokes. Upstrokes may feel awkward at first and the notes produced may be quieter than downstrokes.

My favourite is the Gibson J200 – it sounds lovely and is smooth to play. I think it’s great that there are more female guitarists in the industry but male-led guitar bands like Travis the Libertines and the Killers were more my inspiration. It’s great to have influences and the cool thing about the guitar is that no matter what music you’re into there will be a guitar part in it. So take inspiration from bands and guitarists but try to create your own unique sound. · Amy’s new single Poison Prince is out on May 19.
Paul Weller: changing man
Telegraph.co.uk – May 10, 2008
‘ In the end it was his father who told him he needed to pull himself together ‘and earn some money’. He went back on the road often performing in half-empty halls and eventually the songs started flowing again. The music he now started making was a direct reaction to the Style Council – guitar-led with rougher edges a mixture of English pastoral and late-1960s psychedelic rock with its echoes of late Small Faces and Traffic ‘proper songs played by a band with guitars and proper drummers’. In 1993 Wild Wood returned Weller to the top of the charts and two years later Stanley Road became one of the bestselling albums of his career. Suddenly Weller was fashionable again feted by the new generation of Britpop bands asis and Blur as a seminal influence. ‘It was a mixture of bemusement on my behalf and also relief’ he now says. ‘?”h people actually like me again!” Everybody likes to be liked and musicians are the most insecure people going probably.
