Kaki King: She still whacks at her guitar in fascinating ways as on Bone Chaos in the Castle. But King is stretching beyond the world of John Fahey-esque instrumental guitar music. Her voice is light and charming as on Life Being What It Is. New album Dreaming of Revenge was released earlier this month. Everest: The guitars buzz like vintage Crazy Horse but frontman Russell Pollard’s voice has a bit more fragile vulnerability than Neil Young’s.

South by Southwest known as SXSW presented 1775 bands in its official showcases and with unofficial shows there were easily more than 2000 bands performing in Austin during the festival’s four busy days Wednesday through Saturday along with a few stragglers on Sunday. So this is not exactly an overview of SXSW where showcases and daytime symposiums are well organized and what surrounds them is a ruckus of business and pleasure. ne person could attend only a small percentage of the music. There were about 12500 registered participants at the convention as well as the members of those 1775 bands. Unofficial events — parties promotions and concerts like the 10-hour “Mess With Texas 2” show on Saturday — have swarmed around the official festival providing additional chances to hear groups as word-of-mouth spreads. White Denim the Austin band that was the supercharged finale for my own SXSW — a power trio with a rocketing punk-speed take on twangy Texas garage-rock — played seven shows from March 11 to 15. Lykke Li a Swedish singer who delivered pop love songs with a cutting voice and wily acoustic arrangments performed in four places on Friday alone.

Guitar Hero originally released in fall 2005 is a video game that gives players the chance to rock out to hits from a number of decades. Two players can compete against each other in the game or one can play in career mode. Speed as well as the number and combinations of buttons used increases as a player progresses from easy to expert. The original version featured songs such as ?Smoke on the Water? by Deep Purple and ?Fat Lip? by Sum 41.

The 11-piece band cycled through three chords and he sang entirely about love or entirely about music: hold the words up to the light and they could go either way. The feeling of the new songs was somewhere between Western swing and rhythm and blues. The band a weird compound included pedal-steel guitar fiddle trumpet Hammond organ piano a British drummer (Neal Wilkinson) with a perfected Los Angeles studio-session slow groove and backup vocalists with an archaic Jordanaires style of ooh-wee-oohing. Morrison oblique behind sunglasses and in a dark suit saying nearly nothing cued the band throughout. He tugged it and pushed it with abrupt shooting-hand gestures working it like a kite. They looked tense and he looked imperious.
