Even the musicians that comprise the Grammy-winning quartet spoke of how impressed they were with the audience many of whom were trained classical guitarists. During the university’s four-day guitar festival professional musicians and local guitarists spent ample time together. “They’re really an amazing group. They’re so attentive and so into the music” said Bill Kanengiser one of the quartet’s members.

Introduced seven years ago partly to alleviate demand for rare tone woods Martin’s X-Series guitars are made of high-pressure laminate (HPL the same material used in Formica products) comprising compressed layers of paper finished with digitally enhanced illustrations or photographs of wood grains. "They don’t require lacquering or binding ? another environmental benefit ? and they’re less expensive and much easier to make than our traditional wooden guitars which take up to three months and sometimes longer" says Boak. The X-Series guitar takes about a week to make and costs between $399 and $1300 (U. ) compared to the $2500 to $5000 (U. ) that the company’s top-grade wood models fetch… By all accounts the HPL guitars sound as good or nearly as good as their tone wood counterparts. Although professional guitarists are reluctant to pick up the HPL guitars beginners are buying. So far the HPL guitars make up 30 per cent of Martin’s total unit output but spokesperson Boak predicts that you’ll eventually see more of them in your local music store. Martin is also experimenting with new plating materials for machine heads (tuners) that are more environmentally friendly than chrome and brass. "It’s our intention to be prepared for the eventuality that traditional tone woods and other guitar-making materials will be come harder to find and prohibitively expensive and to educate the public as to the viability of alternatives in materials and designs" Boak adds. Scofield took up the guitar to play rock as a teenager but studied jazz guitar developing a sufficiently laidback and jazzy sound to play his first big-time gigs alongside those Cool School experts Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan. Maybe nostalgia about the combined sound of those legendary horns and perhaps a little of the late Mulligan’s arranging skills and the intuitive lessons of Miles Davis found its way into This Meets That – the album features a tautly-expressive horn section and so do these gigs with two long-time Scofield partners in drummer Bill Stewart and bassist Steve Swallow. For many fans these are going to be the Scofield live shows they’ve long waited for. · Jazz Cafe NW1 Sat 29; Sage Gateshead Sun 30.

It is the harmonies of a piece of music that help create the mood. When you describe a song as dark and mysterious or bright and happy you are often responding to the harmonies. In a typical jazz band the harmonies are played by the piano or guitar and bass. "Rhythm" is the pulse or heartbeat of the music. It is that part of the music that makes you want to tap your feet and snap your fingers. In jazz the pulse is usually maintained by the bass and drums who "keep time" for the rest of the band. "Improvisation" is another aspect of jazz appreciation and this is the spontaneous creation of music.
