The Magnetic Fields – Music – Review – New York Times
New York Times – Feb 23, 2008
So “Distortion” (Nonesuch) their latest album was a surprise since its songs are awash in guitar discord over a big beat. Would the Magnetic Fields plug in and rock out for their four-night stand at Town Hall? n Thursday night the answer was no. Instead the Magnetic Fields kept their usual configuration. Merritt strummed a high-pitched stringed instrument (formerly a ukulele now a bouzouki although he still sang a song about a ukulele) backed by… ” New and old Mr. Merritt’s songs revolve around four-chord structures that can lean toward folk cabaret country or gentle pop-rock. The concert included songs from various Merritt projects — the Sixths and the Gothic Archies along with the Magnetic Fields — and in all of them the music was as considered as the lyrics. Details were exquisite. In “It’s nly Time” a slightly morbid marriage vow of fidelity beyond mortality the interlocking parts were reshuffled verse by verse so the pizzicato cello part for one verse moved to piano or guitar later on. The noise of “Distortion” was replaced by similar lapidary counterpoint making the words come through more clearly. ne new song a checklist of sexual ambitions — “cobra dancer” dominatrix “porno starlet“ — drew so many chuckles that Mr.

Guitar riffs are quick and powerful and vocals are strong and clear. Electronic and pop music is great on the HX5BT as well with the bass’ power delivering thumping beats. Softer piano-based tunes didn’t seem as lively as guitar-driven music in our tests and slower notes especially seemed to fade a little too quickly. Volume on the Hi-Fi is good although we did feel that it could be louder. With the unit’s propensity towards music such as rock and electronic we would have liked to have been able to really crank it. As it is we found maximum volume to be very loud but still a comfortable listening level. f course with the HX5BT’s bevy of inputs volume will often depend upon the mp3 player PC or similar device which is connected to the Hi-Fi system in which case maximum volume may be too loud but by the same token it could also be too quiet.

Steven Bradford and Kevin Martin have unique voices that are easily heard over the piano and guitar background sounds. The drums by Isaac Cass provide the songs with a toe-tapping rhythm and accompanied with the guitars by Josh Cass and Santino Romeri the music is perfect for dancing. In “Pretty Song” they use an acoustic guitar which gives their normally dynamic music an alteration to a more lulling tone. However in “Dreams Got Scattered” the group takes on a harder inflection giving the song a stimulating edge. Though classified as indie music Get Back Loretta plays a plethora of genres including soul indie and rock. Get Back Loretta's infectious lyrics and upbeat instrumentals keep all music lovers whether you are a fan of indie or rock dancing to the beat. If once their reach exceeded their grasp they are now not reaching at all. In the studio a patient craftsman like Jimmy Ienner (who also did some work here) can bring forth from this group the occasional brittle guitar work something approximating an R&B groove and effective vocals. When the material is good (”We’re an American Band” “Some Kind of Wonderful” “The Loco-Motion”) the results are pleasing pop hard rock. Live it’s another story. The groove is replaced with a sort of lumbering monolith that’s not always sure where it’s going. The vocals are painful and organist Craig Frost and guitarist Mark Ferner seem way out of their league when attempting anything more ambitious than scales.

It’s an easy way to waste a few hours and have a bit of fun. It’s very easy to use and may even work as a gateway to other more complex music programs if you get the composer’s bug. SNY’S JamTrax is a music program aimed directly at kids but is an addictive little toy for anyone who dares to have a go. What’s more it costs a meagre $20 (at the time of writing) and is very easy to use. If you’ve ever caught yourself singing along to the radio or found yourself staring into space imagining your life as a famous musician well… Still for the price it’s no big deal. Put simply JamTrax is a sequencer and Sony provides you with the library of loops to sequence. Loops are just blocks of audio such as a guitar riff or drum beat. JamTrax includes guitar drum bass and effects loops among others which can be layered on the main screen in tracks. The tracks are divided by blocks or bars of four beats. Each loop is quantised to the four-beat blocks (including each beat within the block) so they will always match up to parallel beats on other tracks and will always sound in time assuming the beats aren’t syncopated. Using the mouse and the paint tool you simply click and drag how much of each loop you want to lay down; use the eraser tool to un-paint.
