They always have defended the pop side in their music. There was even some kind of a polemic between Alex and Paul Morley about ?popism? and ?rockism? in The Gurdian (He dared to accuse Franz of being a ?pro-rockism? band !!!). And there were that early article in which Paul defined the band like a mix between a ?boy band? and Joy Division: ?Boy Division?. And the true is that they?re so good and so intelligent to be considered one of those cheap guitar bands.

Doug Martsch may not fit the mould – he’s white bearded 38years old and prone to psychedelic guitar solos – but the frontmanof Boise Idaho indie-rock institution Built to Spill is a baller. “These days I’m much more interested in basketball than music”Martsch confesses. “I used to go to bed every night thinking ofmusic working on it in my head. Now I usually fall asleep watchinga basketball game. And yet his hoops affinity almost turned to catastrophe. Earlyin 2006 Martsch was in Portland regon home of his belovedPortland Trailblazers – finishing up the sixth Built to Spillalbum You In Reverse. Playing in a run with StephenMalkmus and members of the Shins he was poked in the eye… I’m a regular person. And I know I’m not verytalented as a singer or a guitar-player.
